This day recognizes the passing of the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833, which ended the practice of slavery across the British Empire, including Canada. In 2021, August 1 was designated as Emancipation Day in Canada, with the province of Nova Scotia following the federal declaration on April 13, 2021. These declarations allow for reflection and recognition of our shared history and provide an opportunity to build new traditions that acknowledge our ancestors and honour our community’s past.
The African Nova Scotian Wellbeing and Prosperity Index is integral to help understand key economic indicators and their effects on our local African Nova Scotian communities. This will be an informative discussion highlighting community voices in this work and providing recommendations for using these data and insights moving forward.
Date: May 22, 2024
Time: 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.
Location: Halifax Central Library, Paul O'Regan Hall
